Suffering is defined as the state of undergoing pain, distress or hardship. Sorrow is a feeling of deep distress caused by loss. Grief is affliction, anguish or heartbreak. No matter what words we choose to describe loss, we all experience these seasons walking through the valley.

One year ago today, my sweet husband passed away unexpectedly. Fourteen hours from doorstep to death. It didn’t seem possible and it didn’t seem real … for a very long time. The finality of death is irrevocable and irreversible. However, those in Christ can rejoice through our sorrow as we look to eternal life in the Kingdom of God.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Hebrews 4:16

He calls us to come as we are, without pretense. So approach, I did. With unending days of little sleep, brokenness and fear, I drew near to Christ. He carried my sorrow and comforted my soul. He rescued me from the darkness and I saw hope in the devastation. Out of the ashes came beauty, as I looked to the One who truly heals the brokenhearted.

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. – Romans 12:12

I find I am not alone, as I sit in the palm of His most precious hand. First and foremost, I am thoroughly, exquisitely and completely loved by Him. His grace is sufficient. His presence comforts and His promises assure.

As I place my affections on Him, I am called to ponder all He has done for me. I am thankful for His provision, love, mercy and grace. I am thankful for a sweet church filled with those who love Jesus, my family, my health, His truth and His promises! Rather than demand to understand, I rest in my God who is faithful, loving, wise, powerful and good. I am grateful for all He chooses to reveal to me.

I pray that as I learn to treasure Him more, there will be more compassion and encouragement overflowing for others.  As I sit at His feet, I pray He is enough and that I shall not want.
