Genesis 4 – The Devastation of Sin, Punishment for Sin, and God’s Grace To Sinners

HEART PREPARATION
“The sin of our nature is like a sleeping lion, the least thing that awakens it makes it rage. The sin of our nature, though it seems quiet, and lies as fire hid under the embers, yet if it be a little stirred and blown up by a temptation, how quickly may it flame into scandalous evils?”
Thomas Watson

SCRIPTURE FOR REFLECTION
Mark 7:20-23
“What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Romans 3:23-25a
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith.

Romans 6:12-13
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.

MEDITATION ON THE SERMON PASSAGE
Read Genesis 4:1-16.

In these verses, we see the devastation of sin, the punishment for sin, and God’s grace on display amidst a situation deserving of wrath. Where do you see the Holy Spirit revealing sin in your life? How do you see God’s grace evident in his payment for your sin, but also in how you can conquer that sin in your daily life?
