Worship through Prayer – July 22, 2018

Is. 66:2 – “All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.” Join with me as we pray this morning that God would makes us a humble people.

Father,

We come before you as your children who are accepted by you by our faith in your Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ. We confess that we are sinful people. In our pride we tend to downplay our sin or minimize its seriousness. Help us to see again this morning our need to approach you with a heart that is broken and contrite for the ways that we have sinned against you, and thank you for the promise in your Word that this is a sacrifice that you will not despise. You have promised us that you will both resist the proud and that you will give grace to the humble. We beg you Father to make us humble like Jesus, as we desperately need you to pour out your grace on us.

Help us to be a people that tremble before your Word, a people that come each Sunday morning as a thirsty deer approaching a stream of water. May our thoughts this morning be consumed by your Word. May we tremble before your holiness and praise you for your mercy. Like the Psalmist David, we confess our iniquities, and we are sorry for our sin. They are a heavy burden for us, a burden too heavy to bear, but we thank you that for our sake you made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him (in Christ) we might become the righteousness of God.

May we walk out this humility in the ways that we fulfill the one another commands in Scripture; bearing with one another in love, living in harmony with one another, and preferring one another above ourselves. For the brother or sister here this morning who is bringing their gift before the altar and knows that there is something between them and another believer, may you give them the grace and humility to go and be reconciled first to that person so that they can then offer a sacrifice of praise that will be acceptable to you.

As we leave this place and go to our neighborhoods and workplaces, may we go with the sweet aroma of a humble believer who faithfully and genuinely loves their neighbor and prefers their co-workers above themselves. Would our humble lives shine before others as a light pointing to our Savior, that they may see our good works and come to glorify our father in Heaven.

Be glorified in our midst this morning we pray. Be glorified in our songs of worship as we pour out our praise to you, be glorified in our giving that shows that we love you more than the money in our bank accounts, and be glorified as we listen to our dear brother, as the messenger of your Word for us this morning, who points us to the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. For it’s in his name we pray, the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, amen.
